Blackberry 8800
The BlackBerry 8800 Cingular smartphone at slightly more than ½” is the thinnest full QWERTY BlackBerry. It features internal GPS so you can have a Blackberry 8800 and plan with GPS that provides real time turn-by-turn voice directions with Cingular TeleNav for as little as an additional $5.99 per month for 10 trips.
A Cingular specific feature, Push to Talk (PTT) is $9.99 per month. You can instantly see the availability of your contacts before calling them and make individual or group PTT calls, and you can swap over anytime to a regular wireless call. A 312 MHz processor and 64 MB flash memory drive a rich media player for music and smooth videos. A microSD expansion card slot adds up to 2 GB of additional memory.
Intelligent light sensing technology automatically optimizes the good sized 2.5″ 240 x 320 LCD screen lighting levels for indoor and outdoor viewing. Advanced sound technology cancels out background noise and echo to ensure you can always hear and be heard.
The Blackberry 8800 adopts the Pearl’s four-way trackball but with a full QWERTY keyboard. The keys are large but the neighborhood is more crowded than with the 8700c. Front panel buttons assist one hand operation of most calling and smartphone features. That being said the 8800 is a wide cell phone and may not fit well in smaller hands when pressed against your ear. This possibly awkward design feature is easily overcome, however, with a Bluetooth headset.
The RIM Blackberry 8800 does well what BlackBerrys became famous for - email. The 8800 offers push technology and can sync with your company’s BlackBerry Enterprise server with support for Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino, or Novell GroupWise to deliver corporate email in real time. The handset can support up to 10 accounts, including POP3 and IMAP4. There is an email wizard to guide you through the various setup processes. An attachment viewer handles file formats such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and WordPerfect, as well as PDFs, JPEGs, GIFs, and more. Other messaging options include text, multimedia, and instant messaging, although the IMs are once again limited to the proprietary BlackBerry Messenger client.
