AT&T 3125 Flip Smartphone

AT&T Cingular 3125/3100 Smartphone is the slimmest Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone flip in the U.S. The Cingular 3125 is the AT&T branded version of the HTC Star Trek. This is a fashionable, high-end clamshell handset and an overmatching competitor of the aging Motorola RAZR.

Overall the 3125 is a very portable design for a smartphone. The flip feature is appreciated when you don’t have a safe pocket or bag to store your phone. One design compromise was to place the MicroSD slot behind the SIM card. Inconvenient, but not a big deal unless you swap MicroSD cards frequently.

The 3125 does not have a touch screen. Menu navigation and the soft keys are located just below the display. The number pad is spacious even for bigger fingers but some mobile phone reviewers bemoan the lack of a QWERTY keyboard. The ClearVue suite lets you view Microsoft Office documents and PDF files but with this version of Windows Mobile you cannot edit them or create new documents anyway, so maybe you don’t really need the QWERTY convenience. If working on Word or Excel documents is important to you you want an 8125 or 8525.

The AT&T 3125 has EDGE but does not have WiFi. You can, however, still use your 3125 as a wireless modem for your laptop through either a USB or Bluetooth connection. Data Connect is the right Cingular data plan for tethering your mobile device to your laptop. Be careful here. You would still be able to make the modem connection but without Data Connect you might get billed at the out of bucket rate. We will sort out Cingular’s confusing data plan choices, which are becoming more accommodating for smartphone users.

The device comes with Outlook Mobile. Direct push email is available through Microsoft GoodLink, and Cingular Xpress Mail. The 3125 can also be configured to get your POP3 and IMAP4 email. Instant messaging apps are available through the MSN client or the web browser. If the flip feature compromises power the AT&T Cingular 8525 is a full-fledged Pocket PC.
