Palm Treo 680
The Palm Treo 680 smartphone is probably the best PDA - phone integrator in the field. For example, you can type in the name or initials of a contact on the keypad to dial them. Or, use the touch-screen and stylus to copy information from an email and quickly paste it into another email or text message. Palm made its bones as a PIM and the Treo 680 PDA smartphone has the expected Palm PIM suite which includes the calendar, contacts, memos and ToDo, along with Voice Recorder for voice memos. The 680 has a full QWERTY key pad with backlighting.
Another distinctive feature of this Cingular Wireless Palm PDA cell phone is that it can stream audio and video. The razor sharp 2.2″ 320 x 320 LCD color touch screen makes the Treo 680 a popular Cingular PDA phone. You have the equivalent of an interactive micro HDTV. Connect a Bluetooth headset for privacy or ear buds through the standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.
The Blazer v4.5 web browser has been enhanced with new caching rules. Palm has also improved JavaScript support on this device making many more non-mobile optimized websites pleasantly accessible on the go. Ironically, the built-in camera has lousy resolution.
The Treo 680 is a Palm hand held computer that runs the Palm OS Garnet operating system v5.4.9. That means that thousands of commercial, Palm shareware, freeware and open source applications, games and utilities for the Palm OS platform are available for download to your device. The expansion card slot is compatible with full sized SD cards, and supports up to 2 GB of memory. With a separate Bluetooth receiver the phone qualifies for the Cingular GPS service.
For the mobile professional Documents to Go is included. Docs to Go supports creating and editing native Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. v8 also includes PDF to Go, which is a native Adobe PDF viewer.
Versamail is included as the default email client. It supports POP, IMAP and Microsoft Exchange accounts. Email also supports gmail, Yahoo Mail, .Mac, AOL email and others. For organizations that run Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, the Treo 680 PDA smart phone has built in Exchange Server ActiveSync that will directly import and enable corporate email, calendar and contact synchronization. There is also a wide selection of alternative email push clients available. On the cell phone side the Treo 680 has handsfree speakerphone, cingular ringtones, a vibrate mode, and picture caller ID.
