Bluetooth Makes it Easy for All Your Devices and Accessories to Work Together

Bluetooth is one of the latest marketing buzzwords for PDAs and cellular phones, along with PCs and especially laptops. It is a wireless technology designed to let products and accessories built by different manufacturers work together, without requiring special access codes or driver installation. Theoretically, any Bluetooth accessory should work with any Bluetooth-enabled device, and multiple accessories working with the same device shouldn’t interfere with each other.

Garmin GPS10 Bluetooth GPS Receiver with Mount and Software

List Price: $267.99
Buy New: $134.00
You Save: $133.99 (50%)

Garmin jumps on the wireless bandwagon with its GPS 10 Deluxe, a GPS receiver that communicates with Bluetooth-enabled Pocket PCs and PC laptops to allow easy, intuitive navigating. Unlike GPS devices with built-in screens, the GPS 10 Deluxe displays its mapping and navigational data on your mobile computer’s monitor, ensuring superior close-up detail, more memory storage, and faster operation than with traditional navigators. And because it’s wireless, users won’t have to futz with cumbersome cables that get in the way each time they need to move the laptop or reposition the receiver. The cable-free solution is ideal for cars and trucks, as the device installs via the included magnetic or Velcro mounts, or even outside the vehicle should users need a clear path to the satellites. It’s also waterproof, so it can withstand nasty weather and poor conditions.

The GPS 10 Deluxe comes with a fully unlocked MapSource City Select North America CD, which includes detailed maps of the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico, with more than five million points of interest and intensive street-level map data. In addition, the package boasts two easy-to-use navigation applications: nRoute, which installs on a Bluetooth-enabled laptop, and Que, a Pocket PC program. The applications turn both mobile devices into fully functioning navigators. Users can easily look up addresses, restaurants, and services, or they can select a destination and receive automatic routing, turn-by-turn directions, off-route recalculation, and voice prompts as they drive.

The Bluetooth communication works at distances of up to 30 feet, adding to the unit’s versatility. Additional features include rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power your GPS receiver for up to a dozen hours at a time and a 12-volt power adapter that connects to your cigarette lighter. The GPS 10 Deluxe measures 1.77 by 3.46 by 0.75 inches (W x H x D) and is covered by a one-year warranty.

For example, if you pick up a Bluetooth headset for your current PDA, and then in a years time replace it with a new PDA, the headset should work with the new PDA without any difficulties. With some older PDA Bluetooth accessories and devices, this is not always the case, but generally the more recent the design of the accessory or device, the more likely it is to work with other Bluetooth products.

PDAs, Cellular Phones, and Computers

New PDAs today resemble cellular phones as much as classic PDAs like the Palm Pilot. Most of these devices are Bluetooth-enabled, and even have the capability to link with other Bluetooth-enabled PDAs and cellular phones to exchange data. For models that are not Bluetooth-enabled, there are frequently PDA Bluetooth accessories available that will add Bluetooth capabilities to the unit. Bluetooth adapters are also available for PCs and laptops, usually plugging into a USB port, allowing you to easily exchange data between your computer and your PDA.

Just about any type of data can be transferred over a Bluetooth link, from electronic business cards and pictures to word processing documents and PowerPoint presentations. For transferring data from a PDA to a computer, special software is often needed and included with the Bluetooth adapter. However, PDAs running Windows Mobile can communicate natively with computers running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.

Having a Bluetooth PDA and a Bluetooth adapter for your computer can eliminate the need for a docking station or sync cable, removing one more piece of clutter from your desktop. You can even set the two devices up so they automatically synchronize their data when theyre in range of each other.

Other PDA Bluetooth Accessories

Headphones and headsets are the most common PDA Bluetooth accessories right now. Wireless headphones are great if your PDA has music stored on it, because you dont have an unsightly wire running from your head to your pocket or purse. Headsets and earpieces allow hands-free operation of your cell phone or smart phone, which is not only convenient but is also quickly becoming a legal requirement world-wide for using your phone in your car.

Printer manufacturers are quickly adding Bluetooth capabilities to their products, turning them into convenient PDA Bluetooth accessories. Previously, to print something stored on your PDA, you had to use the docking station or sync cable to download the information to your computer, then print it from the computer. With a Bluetooth-enabled printer, you can send your data directly to the printer without the intervening steps. If your computer is also Bluetooth-enabled, it can send data to the printer as well, eliminating the need to hook up the printer to the computer or network.

There are many other PDA Bluetooth accessories available for your PDA, and with Bluetooth it doesn’t matter who manufactures either the device or the accessory. A Motorola headset will work with an iPhone, and a Palm Tungsten can print spreadsheets on a HP LaserJet. Manufacturers are constantly coming up with new PDA Bluetooth accessories to meet the demands of consumers. Bluetooth technology is making it easier for everyone to communicate.

R James Cook is a personal technology aficionado (some would say geek), and is especially entranced with the wide world of PDAs and their accessories. He shares his thoughts on this world at Bling PDA.

It’s a pretty safe bet that 2008 will be the year of the smartphone, with many new innovative smartphone options coming to the market this year. Buying a smartphone can be overwhelming – there are a lot of different options, and each phone combines a lot of different features. So before you head out to your local big box electronics store, here are a few things that might make it a little bit easier on you:

Taking It to the Next Level

*Features like text messaging, photo capture and sharing have all been doable from simple cell phones for years. But smartphones take those functions up a notch by increasing the quality of the experience, and making these features easier to use. For example, typing out a text message on the full keyboard offered by many smartphones is significantly easier than tapping out a message on a 12-key phone.

Staying in touch with your friends and family is obviously one of the main advantages to a smartphone. Going beyond text messaging, look for a smartphone that will also provide wireless access to your personal e-mail accounts, such as Yahoo!, Gmail or AOL. Some even include an instant messaging application that allows you to chat with your buddy list on the go, giving users a variety of different ways to stay in touch.

* Stay organized on the go. Look for a phone that offers a great calendar, address book, even a task list that syncs to your home or work computer. That way you can stay organized wherever you may be.

* Another great thing about smartphones is that the networks they run on are getting faster and faster. So now, smartphones allow you to browse the Web at broadband speeds to find directions, restaurant reviews, or movie times. And with the larger screen of a smartphone, the Web has never looked better. When looking for a smartphone, ask about network speeds and their impact on the browsing experience.

Style

* The look of the phone should fit your personal style. Look for exciting new colors – such as Palm’s Centro which is available in ruby red – and a design that makes a statement about you when you use the phone.

You Don’t Have to Break the Bank

Until now, most smartphones have cost almost as much as your average American brings home in a single week’s paycheck. Prices upwards of $500 have kept a lot of consumers out of the market. Now, however, you can buy a smartphone for less than $100, a price comparable to what you might pay for a quality traditional mobile phone.

Palm, pioneer of easy-to-use mobile products, has just introduced a smartphone that costs just $99.99 after carrier and Palm rebates. Available in stylish red or black, “Centro is definitely not your boss’s smartphone,” says Stephanie Richardson, product marketing manager at Palm. “Today, people are using their smartphones not just for calls and e-mail but as a way to organize their social lives. With a variety of messaging options, a great Web browser, and other fun things like a camera and MP3 player, Centro is designed to better manage your social life.

For many, adding a Palm Treo smartphone to their life is an exciting time. Most are coming from a traditional cellphone and the capabilities of a smartphone never cease to amaze. The Palm Treo features a large color LCD screen, full keyboard and software for syncing your personal data with your PC or Mac. Getting familiar with the capabilities of your new Treo smartphone can be overwhelming in the beginning. Once you get over the initial learning curve, owning a Treo can be a rewarding experience.

The Palm Treo 750 combines the power of Windows Mobile 5.0 with Palm ease of use and Cingular’s quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE. The external antenna is gone, and the handset’s camera has been upgraded to the smartphone standard at 1.3 megapixels. Palm has trimmed some weight too. The 750 weighs in at only 5.40 ounces, the lightest Treo phone ever released.

The 750 uses the miniSD card standard and MMC-based memory cards so if you are swapping up from an earlier Treo you will need a new memory card. The device is well-buttoned and suitable for one hand operation, although some reviewers would prefer larger and/or more tactile buttons. The LCD screen is 240 x 320 to accommodate Windows OS but unless compared side to side still seems as sharp and colorful as its Palm OS predecessors.

List Price: $899.99
Buy New: $249.99

Protecting Your Treo

The Palm Treo is an expensive gadget, so you should make plans to protect your Treo. In the US, both Verizon and Sprint offer insurance on the Treo. For a fee of roughly $5, you can insure your Treo against loss or accidents. With insurance, you’ll have the piece of mind that your valuable Treo is protected. If your wireless provider does not offering insurance, another option is to sign up for the StuffBak protection program. Stuffbak is a loss prevention and recovery service. You purchase a Stuffbak label that gets applied to the back of your Treo. Should you lose your Treo, there is an 800# that allows the finder to collect a reward upon return.

Insurance and recovery services are both great options should something happen to your Treo. The best option is to protect your Treo smartphone with a good case and screen protector. There are many options when it comes to selecting a case for the Treo. When choosing a case, you can select from holster, pouch, skin, wallet and more. In most cases, its also a good idea to add a screen protector. Through the daily use of your Treo, you will find yourself touching the screen quite often. A screen protector will guard against scratches and its recommended even if youve opted for an enclosed case. Adding the correct Treo accessory can protect your smartphone for many years.

Treo Software

Out of the box, Palm OS based Treo smartphones comes bundled with all the software you need to sync with your PC or Mac. If you own a Mac, then you should avoid the Treo 700w. In order to sync the 700w with a Macintosh, you would have to use third party software such as Missing Sync by Mark/Space and they do not currently support the Treo 700w. If you are upgrading from a previous Palm device, youll still want to install the software that came with your new Treo. Follow the on-screen directions and you’ll be able to bring your data over to your new Treo. As a previous Palm owner, you should note that some applications might not work on your Treo. To be certain, locate and rename the Backup folder located in your User folder. Once youve completed the transfer of your PIM data, you can add one application at a time to insure compatibility with your Treo.

One of the great things about the Treo is vast catalog of available software applications. There are countless freeware and commercial applications. If you own a Palm OS based Treo, then be sure to look for software that supports your model. Owners of the Treo 700w should look for Pocket PC titles that support the Windows Mobile 5 operating system. In either case, its best to slowly add software. Adding incompatible software is the most common cause of an unstable Treo.

Get To Know Treo

The Treo is a remarkable device that offers robust software to help you manage your calendar, check email, browse the web, take photos, listen to MP3s and more. With any new technology, there is a slight learning curve and the Treo is no different. I encourage any new Treo owner to explore the features of their new smartphone. If you have questions, there are several good resources online or you can visit your local bookstore. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll be left wondering how you ever managed without a Treo.

Largely, the answer has to be yes. The Daily Telegraph was one of only a handful of publications to receive a review handset and we really got the chance to put it through its paces.

There’s no denying that the iPhone is an absolutely beautiful device; it’s so simple and intuitive to use that you barely need to look at the instructions before turning it on. It’s not cheap — an 8GB iPhone will cost £269, and you have to sign up to an 18-month contract on one of three tariffs with O2, the iPhone’s exclusive network partner in the UK.

But, as Apple points out, with the iPhone you’re not getting just a mobile handset: you’re also getting an iPod and a web-surfing tool for your money. One of the iPhone’s most impressive features is the Safari browser, which offers all the benefits of the desktop version. You can surf the entire web, not just sites that have been optimised for use on mobile phones or handheld devices.

Where this really excels is in Wi-Fi hotspots. The iPhone is wireless‑enabled, so you can surf the web at broadband speeds in a Wi‑Fi zone. Apple has signed an agreement with The Cloud network to provide free Wi-Fi access at all of its 7,500 hotspots around the country.

However, one of the big problems with the iPhone is the technology it uses to surf the web and download data when you’re not near a wireless hotspot. The iPhone runs on Edge, which is a type of mobile phone network. Most handsets used by British consumers use the 3G network for data delivery, which can offer broadband‑like browsing speeds.

Edge is twice as slow as 3G and O2 is having to tinker with its mobile phone masts to make them compatible with Edge. Even so, by the time consumers start making calls on their iPhones tomorrow, just 30 per cent of the country will be covered by Edge, and there’s no clear indication of where, when and by how much that coverage will increase.

A real shame, considering how spectacular the touchscreen Safari browser is. Also superb is the iPod music player. If you thought the “click wheel” navigation system was a revelation, the touchscreen goes one better.

CoverFlow, which allows you to flick through album art by running your finger across the screen, looks great on this device, and because the iPhone synchronises with iTunes, transferring your playlists is a cinch.

The iPhone uses the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod, so most peripherals, such as speakers, should work with it. Of course, at 8GB the iPhone’s storage is tiny compared with other iPods, including the 160GB Classic, but it’s enough to hold about 2,000 songs.

The iPhone also comes with a feature that wasn’t present on the original iPhones when they were launched in the US in June: the iTunes Wireless Music Store. With the push of a button, you can download songs direct to your handset from iTunes, which you can then copy on to your computer the next time you synchronise your iPhone.

This download service only works in Wi-Fi hotspots, but it’s a stroke of genius, giving a whole new meaning to impulse purchasing.

The iPhone has lots of other neat tricks up its sleeve, too — good support for a variety of email accounts, including BlackBerry-like push-email through Yahoo! Mail; a dedicated button taking you to YouTube; integrated Google Maps (but no in-built sat nav); a two-megapixel camera; video and photo viewer; calendar application; and of course a phone.

So should you rush out and buy an iPhone? Yes and no. For some, its sleek lines and well-designed touchscreen interface will be too much to resist. For others, it boils down to a few simple questions: can you afford it? And can you overlook some of its weaknesses, such as its reliance on Edge?

The iPhone is not a smartphone — you cannot open or edit documents on it — but if you want a clever all-in-one device that combines the best elements of a music player, web browser and mobile phone, the iPhone deserves serious consideration. For those still unsure, wait a year or so. The technology can only get better.

The Apple iPhone was introduced into the world, at least to the US, on June 29th 2007. Thousands of people clamored to be the first to get their hands on an iPhone and from most accounts, they are very proud of their new acquisitions. Though Apple provided the basic accessories required to use the iPhone, like most special things, it came into the world naked. So after investing $500 to $600 on an iPhone it only makes prudent sense to invest a few extra dollars in an iPhone case to protect it.

Initial product stress tests of the Apple iPhone have been quite impressive. Apple wisely switched to optical grade glass for the innovative touch screen of the iPhone and it is almost impossible to scratch it. Even with a key. This, however, doesnt mean it should be left unprotected and the rest of the iPhone is still prone to dings and scratches.

The solution to protecting your new iPhone is actually quite simple, though all the talk about skins, cases, wallets, and screen protectors can be a little bewildering. Dont worry, below are the options available for protecting your iPhone and the good news is that they typically cost much less than your monthly bill with AT&T.

Types of iPhone Cases:

*iPhone Skins — a skin is just a cover that completely wraps around your iPhone with cutouts to allow you access to the touch screen, main navigation button, as well as the side buttons, charger, and camera. iPhone skins are made from silicone, which is a flexible, yet rugged type of plastic. The benefit of a skin, is that it will protect the surfaces of your iPhone from nicks and scratches and even offer some protection if dropped. However, dont rely on a silicone skin to offer you complete protection against drops.

IPhone skins come in clear silicone as well as several popular colors ranging from feminine pink to stealth black. Some iPhone skins also come with a screen protector and neck strap, but be sure to check the product details to make certain.

*Phone Cases and Wallets — a step up in style and convenience is an iPhone case or wallet. Many of these cases also include a belt clip so you can keep your iPhone at the ready. Unlike cell phone holsters, a case or wallet fully protects your iPhone when not in use. Cases and wallets typically come in both leather and canvas varieties and in a wide range of styles. Chose the type that best suits your usage and expresses your personal style. You may even want several cases to match different clothing and occasions!

*iPhone Screen Protectors — an iPhone screen protector typically is a piece of very thin silicone with an adhesive backing that covers the entire front of the iPhone. Like a skin, it also has a circular cutout to expose the main navigation button at the bottom of the iPhone. A skin can then be placed over the screen protector. Not all iPhone screen protectors are created equal though. The better ones have dust resistant and anti-glare properties. Many iPhone skins and cases already come with a screen protector so you typically dont need to purchase one separately.

An Apple iPhone is a truly innovative technology product that is a joy to own. Their owners have every right to be proud and can be forgiven, at least for now, for showing them off every chance they get. And you can tell a truly proud and worthy Apple iPhone owner by how they have chosen to dress up and protect their “baby”.

There is no precise definition for smartphone but one that works for everybody is a cell phone with a computer operating system. More and more road warriors are leaving their laptop and disconnected PDA behind for short trips because a smartphone can do all the same things that a PDA can and some essential things a laptop can in a smaller package. The new Moto Q is 0.45 inches thin and weighs-in at 4.1 ounces.

If you are considering downsizing your personal mobile office or want to provide some input to your IT manager here is one major consideration about choosing a PDA smartphone.

The popularity of smartphone operating systems has taken different paths in the USA and the rest of the industrialized world. Symbian OS, an open standard operating system for data enabled mobile phones, is the top seller with a huge 76% smartphone market share worldwide. RIM, which makes Blackberry, has only a 6% worldwide market share, but dominates the USA with 53% of the domestic smartphone market. Palm OS, which has been around since 1996, has about 1/3 of the US market.

Talking about operating systems is geeky but the OS is the guts of every PDA smartphone and will, in the end, determine what you can do with your smartphone. RIM has a proprietary OS which is unbeatable for secure email but will not allow you to easily edit a Microsoft Word document. Blackberry is a first class product with one-stop business solutions. RIM has deserved brand loyalty and will continue to do well within the corporate environment. A lone wolf who works with Microsoft Office on his desktop may find himself disadvantaged if RIM OS cannot keep up with the flow of new smartphone applications from other manufacturers.

Palm also has a proprietary operating system but appears to be positioning itself to survive in a Windows Mobile world as well. The new generation of Palm Treos comes with Windows Mobile. Smartphone consumers are looking for business applications beyond contact information and email. GPS tracking and GPS navigation are but two. Microsoft already has 20,000 applications for its smartphone platform, and an army of developers to keep new applications coming.

Perhaps you would not make a smartphone purchase decision based solely on the operating system, but you do want to be sure that the smartphone OS will not prevent you from integrating with what is already on your desktop. Plus, categorizing smartphones by operating system instead of brand will narrow the choices and help un-complicate the decision making.

These are the major brands and the primary operating system of recently introduced smartphones. Some brands may use Symbian OS on older models with ARM processors. Some models are Java enabled.

Blackberry - RIM OS Palm - Palm OS, Windows Mobile Nokia - Symbian Motorola - Windows Mobile Hewlett Packard - Windows Mobile Samsung - Windows Mobile Sony-Ericsson — Symbian HTC (rebranded by cell phone service providers) - Windows Mobile

Behind all the hoopla about the long anticipated release of the Apple iPhone, and the reports of people standing in line all night just to spend $600 to buy one, there are still a whole lot of other (better) smartphone choices out there.

The {tag]AT&T Cingular 8525 smartphone[/tag] is one of them. For my money the 8525 is the hands-down business productivity handset champion. The 8525 has some bulk and is a little clunky to carry around. If your first consideration is a slim, easy-to-carry handset go with the Motoral RAZR V3xx, and KRZR K3. The latter are not productivity tools but they do share something in common with the AT&T 8525 - HSPDA.

HSDPA is the acronym for High-Speed Downlink Packet Access. Without getting geeky, HSPDA is 3.5G (G is for generation) protocol for mobile telephone data transmission. This new protocol provides download speeds on your mobile phone handset equivalent to the speed of the DSL line in your home. That means that with a HSPDA handset, like the 8525 or the RAZR V3xx, that you can surf the internet and download email attachments as fast as you can at home on your desktop computer. For many people that also means that smooth video and streaming music will be doable on your mobile handset. AT&T is offering an array of new video and music services to take advantage of HSDPA broadband speeds. The 8525’s 400Mhz processor keeps the entertainment moving.

HSDPA is available in 134 markets with populations of 100,000 or more. AT&T is the country’s largest cell phone service provider so when they say that they plan on expanding their broadband network we can believe them. Sprint and Verizon currently provide CDMA (an alternative broadband protocol) in more markets than AT&T. CDMA is not avialble overseas, however. GSM and HSDPA are.

Which brings us back to the 8525 smartphone. The 8525 comes equipped with WiFi which can connect to any of the thousands of WiFi hotspots across the country. If the WiFi connection drops out the 8525 will immediately connect with AT&T’s EDGE data network, which is available everywhere in the US you can get GSM service. You can use your 8525 as a broadband modem that connects to PC and Mac laptops. Bluetooth 2.0 is a given. The point is that for connectivity the 8525 has you covered every which way. The iPhone, by the way, is not broadband (HSDPA) capable. Not yet anyway.

The 8525 has lots of other productivity features. The slide out keyboard is a real tactile keyboard. It lights up in the dark, which is very useful. You probably will not write a novel on your handset, but you could, or maybe you will just want to edit Word documents, and you can do that too.

The 8525 is a little more expensive than other AT&T smartphones, but AT&T runs promotions and sometimes offers refurbished 8525 handsets, which make this smartphone very attractive. Broadband connectivity, big screen, real keyboard, fast processor, the entire Pocket PC software library. There’s more but you can see why the 8525 is my productivity champion.
